Gastric mucin proteins, primarily Mucin-5AC (MUC5AC) and Mucin-6 (MUC6), are high-molecular-weight, heavily glycosylated proteins that form the structural backbone of the gastric mucus layer. Conversely, alterations in mucin expression, such as the loss of MUC5AC or the aberrant expression of intestinal mucins like MUC2, are key biomarkers for gastric atrophy, intestinal metaplasia, and gastric cancer progression (nih.gov, researchgate.net). Understanding the regulation and structural integrity of these proteins is essential for developing treatments that reinforce the gastric barrier and for identifying early molecular changes in gastrointestinal malignancies (nih.gov, mdpi.com).
