01

Overview

The stomach mucosa, also known as the gastric mucosa, is the innermost lining of the stomach. It is a specialized mucous membrane that plays critical roles in both digestion and protection of the stomach wall. It consists of an epithelial layer containing various specialized cells (surface cells, parietal cells, chief cells, mucous neck cells, endocrine cells), the lamina propria, and the muscularis mucosae. The gastric pits and glands within the mucosa are responsible for producing digestive enzymes, hydrochloric acid, intrinsic factor, and protective mucus. Its primary functions include protection against acid and enzymes, digestion of proteins, and lubrication to facilitate food movement.
