Gastric mucosal blood flow

01

Overview

Gastric mucosal blood flow refers to the vascular supply that delivers oxygen and nutrients to the gastric mucosa while removing acid, hydrogen ions, and toxic metabolites. This blood flow is crucial for maintaining gastric mucosal integrity, promoting healing following injury, and protecting the mucosa from corrosive agents such as acid, pepsin, and exogenous substances (e.g., alcohol, NSAIDs). Reduced gastric mucosal blood flow predisposes the stomach lining to injury and impedes repair, while increased or normalized blood flow supports mucosal defense and healing. Regulation of this flow involves a complex interplay of neural, hormonal, and local mediators—including prostaglandins, nitric oxide, and various gastrointestinal peptides. While not itself a drug target, modulation of gastric mucosal blood flow is a therapeutic goal in the management and prevention of gastric injury and ulcer disease.
