Overview

Disruption of these defense processes—by drugs (e.g., NSAIDs, alcohol), pathogens (e.g., *Helicobacter pylori*), or stress—can lead to erosive and ulcerative disease, bleeding, and infection

Mechanism of action

For protective agents: Prostaglandin analogs (stimulate mucus and bicarbonate production, decrease acid secretion); Sucralfate forms a protective barrier over mucosal injuries; Bismuth subsalicylate coats ulcers and has antimicrobial effects. For damaging agents: NSAIDs block prostaglandin synthesis, reducing mucus/bicarbonate production; Alcohol damages mucus layer
