Gastric mucosal proteins describe the full spectrum of proteins produced by the cells of the gastric mucosa (the stomach’s innermost lining). This includes structural proteins of the epithelial cells (such as MUC5AC and MUC6 for mucus production), proton pumps (ATP4A, ATP4B of parietal cells), digestive enzymes (pepsinogen, gastric lipase), and signaling molecules (such as gastrin from G-cells). These proteins collectively enable food digestion, protect against chemical injury, and regulate acid secretion. Their expression profile varies by region (fundus vs. antrum) and cell type, and changes dynamically in diseases like gastritis, gastric ulcers, and gastric cancer. Thus, “gastric mucosal proteins” is a collective term—not a single protein or classic molecular target—and is best used in reference to studies of tissue proteomes, region-specific function, or disease processes involving the stomach lining. “Gastric mucosal proteins” is not a canonical therapeutic target but refers to an entire set of proteins with varied functions central to stomach physiology and disease. For molecular targeting, specific members of this group must be defined (e.g., “gastrin receptor,” “H+/K+ ATPase”).
