Gastric Mucus Barrier (GMB)

Target
GMB
Molecular classification
Complex Biological System, Extracellular Matrix, Mucin Layer
01

Overview

The gastric mucus barrier is an essential multi-layered defense system comprised mainly of secreted gel-forming mucins trapping neutralizing agents above tightly joined epithelia—together ensuring safe containment/functionality amid harsh digestive conditions while preventing self-injury. It consists of a mucus layer (primarily composed of mucins), bicarbonate secretion, and a tightly joined epithelial cell lining. Its main functions include physical and chemical protection, pH regulation, and anti-bacterial action. Disruption can lead to conditions like peptic ulcer disease and gastritis, often exacerbated by factors like H. pylori infection, NSAIDs, and alcohol.
