Gastric Mucus Production

Molecular classification
Process, Physiological Process
01

Overview

Gastric mucus production refers to the synthesis and secretion of a gel-like, protective barrier by specialized cells in the stomach lining. This mucus is essential for shielding the gastric epithelium from corrosive gastric acid and digestive enzymes, thereby preventing self-digestion and ulceration. The primary producers of gastric mucus are surface epithelial cells and foveolar (mucous neck) cells. The main structural components of gastric mucus are mucin glycoproteins (MUC5AC and MUC6), water, and bicarbonate. Gastric mucus secretion is tightly regulated through neural, hormonal, and local factors, with prostaglandins playing a key cytoprotective role. Disruption in any component can compromise this barrier function leading to gastritis or peptic ulcer disease.
