Overview

Gastric sensitivity, often referred to as visceral hypersensitivity, is a physiological condition characterized by an increased perception of mechanical or chemical stimuli in the stomach, leading to symptoms such as pain, bloating, and early satiety (Tack et al., 2001, Gastroenterology). It is a primary pathophysiological feature of functional gastrointestinal disorders, most notably functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome (Vanheel & Farre, 2013, Best Practice & Research Clinical Gastroenterology). The condition arises from complex interactions within the brain-gut axis, involving the peripheral sensitization of enteric nerves and central sensitization in the spinal cord and brain (Enck et al., 2017, Nature Reviews Disease Primers). Because gastric sensitivity is a clinical phenomenon or symptom rather than a specific protein, receptor, or enzyme, it is not classified as a discrete therapeutic target (Azpiroz et al., 2007, Gut). Instead, therapeutic strategies focus on modulating the underlying neural pathways and molecular mediators, such as serotonin receptors and transient receptor potential (TRP) channels, to alleviate chronic abdominal discomfort (Wood, 2008, Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology).
