Overview

Gastric smooth muscle refers to the specialized, involuntary non-striated muscle tissue found in the wall of the stomach. It is a key component of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and plays a central role in digestion by generating contractions that mix and propel gastric contents. It's function can be modulated by the enteric nervous system, autonomic nervous system and hormonal signals. Dysfunction can lead to motility disorders such as gastroparesis or achalasia.
