The gastric wall is the multi-layered structure forming the boundary and functional interface between the stomach lumen and surrounding tissues. It consists histologically of four main layers—from innermost to outermost—mucosa, submucosa, muscularis externa, and serosa. The mucosal layer contains specialized glands that secrete mucus for protection against acidic conditions and digestive enzymes/acids necessary for food breakdown. The muscularis externa includes three smooth muscle layers unique among GI organs that enable vigorous churning motions essential for mechanical digestion. The submucosa provides vascular support while the serosal layer forms part of the peritoneum allowing smooth movement in the abdominal cavity. While critical in many physiological processes—including digestion and defense—the term “gastric wall tissue” does not refer to any single molecule or therapeutic target but rather an anatomical entity composed of multiple cell types with diverse functions.
