Gastrin is a peptide hormone produced primarily by G cells in the lining of the stomach (specifically, the antrum). It plays a central role in regulating digestive processes, especially those related to gastric acid secretion and gastrointestinal motility. Gastrin’s primary functions include stimulating parietal cells of the stomach to secrete hydrochloric acid, promoting conversion of pepsinogen to pepsin, enhancing gastric motility and stimulating growth of gastric mucosa.
Gastrin stimulates parietal cells to secrete HCl, both directly and indirectly through ECL cells. PPIs inhibit the H+/K+ ATPase pump on parietal cells, reducing acid secretion. H2-receptor antagonists block histamine receptors on parietal cells. Somatostatin analogs inhibit gastrin release from G cells.
