Gastrin mRNA is the messenger RNA transcribed from the GAST gene, predominantly in G cells of the stomach. It encodes the gastrin peptide hormone, which is essential for stimulating gastric acid secretion and regulating gastric mucosa proliferation. Gastrin mRNA is upregulated in certain gastrointestinal cancers, and its stability can be influenced by epidermal growth factor (EGF) and specific RNA-binding proteins, such as hnRNP K, PCBP1, and nucleolin, contributing to altered gastrin expression in malignancy. While not a drug target itself, gastrin mRNA serves as a diagnostic or prognostic biomarker, and manipulation of its expression is of research interest in studies of tumor biology.
