Overview

The gastrointestinal and vaginal microbiota represent complex ecological communities of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, that reside within the human host. These systems are not single molecular targets but rather biological environments that play critical roles in nutrient metabolism, the development of the immune system, and protection against pathogenic colonization. In the gut, the microbiota facilitates the fermentation of non-digestible carbohydrates into short-chain fatty acids, while the vaginal microbiota, typically dominated by Lactobacillus species, maintains an acidic pH to inhibit pathogens. Dysdysbiosis, or the imbalance of these microbial communities, is strongly linked to various conditions such as Clostridioides difficile infection, inflammatory bowel disease, and bacterial vaginosis. Therapeutic interventions often involve the use of probiotics, prebiotics, or fecal microbiota transplantation to restore a healthy microbial balance and improve clinical outcomes.
