The gastrointestinal colonic mucosa is the innermost layer of the large intestine, consisting of a simple columnar epithelium, the underlying lamina propria, and the muscularis mucosae (StatPearls, 2023). Its primary physiological roles include the absorption of water and electrolytes from luminal contents and the secretion of mucus to facilitate the passage of waste. This tissue serves as a critical selective barrier that prevents the translocation of gut microbiota and toxins into the systemic circulation while hosting a significant portion of the body's immune cells (NIH, 2024). Pathological changes in the colonic mucosa, such as chronic inflammation or malignant transformation, are central to diseases like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colorectal cancer (PubMed, 2022). While many drugs are designed to act locally within this tissue or target specific receptors on its cells, the mucosa itself is an anatomical structure and not a specific molecular therapeutic target.
