Therapeutic strategies targeting this system include the use of antibiotics to eliminate pathogens, probiotics to encourage beneficial growth, and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) to restore microbial diversity (Khoruts & Sadowsky, 2016). Emerging research also explores the gut-brain axis, suggesting the microbiota influences neurological health and behavior (NIH, 2023). Because this entity encompasses an entire microbial community and its environment, it is classified as a therapeutic system or environment rather than a discrete molecular target like a single protein or receptor.
