The gastrointestinal components and microbiota constitute a vast and complex biological system residing within the human digestive tract, consisting of trillions of microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, and viruses (Guinane & Cotter, 2013). This ecosystem is essential for maintaining homeostasis, as it facilitates the fermentation of non-digestible dietary fibers and produces essential vitamins like K and B12 (NIH, 2023). It also plays a fundamental role in the maturation and regulation of the host immune system, acting as a barrier against pathogenic colonization (Lynch & Pedersen, 2016). Disruptions in the composition or function of the microbiota, a state termed dysbiosis, are strongly associated with various pathologies, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and metabolic syndrome (Lynch & Pedersen, 2016). Therapeutic strategies targeting this system include the use of antibiotics to eliminate pathogens, probiotics to encourage beneficial growth, and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) to restore microbial diversity (Khoruts & Sadowsky, 2016). Emerging research also explores the gut-brain axis, suggesting the microbiota influences neurological health and behavior (NIH, 2023). Because this entity encompasses an entire microbial community and its environment, it is classified as a therapeutic system or environment rather than a discrete molecular target like a single protein or receptor.
