Overview

The gastrointestinal epithelial surface is a specialized cellular layer that lines the digestive tract, serving as the primary interface between the body and the external environment (NIH, PMC4253991). Its primary biological function is to act as a semi-permeable barrier that allows for the efficient absorption of nutrients and water while excluding harmful pathogens and toxins (StatPearls, NBK537103). This surface is maintained by a combination of tight junctions between epithelial cells and a protective layer of mucus secreted by goblet cells (PubMed, 28521623). Dysfunction of this barrier is a hallmark of various pathologies, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), celiac disease, and peptic ulcers (NIH, PMC4253991). Pharmacological agents often target this surface to provide cytoprotection, enhance the mucus barrier, or deliver localized anti-inflammatory effects to treat gastrointestinal disorders (StatPearls, NBK551527). For example, sucralfate acts by binding to the surface of ulcerated tissue to form a protective physical barrier (PubChem, CID 6398).
