Overview

The gastrointestinal gas bubble surface is a physical target in the digestive tract where gas becomes trapped in small, stable bubbles within mucus or liquid films (StatPearls, 2023). This entrapment leads to gastrointestinal foam, which is a primary contributor to symptoms like bloating, flatulence, and abdominal distension (Mayo Clinic, 2023). Unlike traditional biological targets such as receptors or enzymes, this target is a liquid-gas interface. Therapeutic agents like simethicone act as antifoaming agents by reducing the surface tension of these bubbles (PubChem, 2024). When the surface tension is lowered, the small, dispersed bubbles coalesce into larger bubbles that are more easily expelled from the body via eructation or flatus. This mechanism is purely physical; the interacting drugs are chemically inert and are not absorbed into the bloodstream (StatPearls, 2023). Targeting this surface is also clinically significant during diagnostic procedures like endoscopy or colonoscopy to improve mucosal visibility by clearing bubbles.

Mechanism of action
