Overview

The gastrointestinal (GI) lumen refers to the inner open space or cavity within the tubular structures of the digestive tract, including the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. It is the central channel through which ingested food, fluids, and digestive secretions pass as they move through the GI tract. The GI lumen is surrounded by several layers of tissue, including the mucosa, submucosa, muscularis propria, and serosa/adventitia. Its primary function is to serve as a conduit for digested food and fluids throughout digestion and absorption processes. Patency (openness) of the GI lumen is essential for normal function, and many diagnostic/therapeutic procedures are performed transluminally via access through this internal space. The intestinal wall forms a selectively permeable barrier between luminal contents and systemic circulation.
