Gastrointestinal luminal content

Gastrointestinal luminal contents refer to the complex mixture within the lumen of the gastrointestinal tract, including digested nutrients, bile acids, digestive enzymes, microbial populations, microbial metabolites (such as short-chain fatty acids), water, and ingested substances. The composition of luminal contents varies along the tract and is influenced by diet, microbiota, health status, and disease. While the contents are critical for nutrient absorption and modulating immune and epithelial functions, they are not a single molecular target or receptor. Instead, they serve as substrates for various physiological and pathological processes, including host–microbiota interactions, mucosal barrier regulation, and local drug metabolism.
