For example, phosphate binders like sevelamer are used to manage hyperphosphatemia in chronic kidney disease by sequestering dietary phosphorus within the gut (PubMed, 30219112). Similarly, potassium binders such as patiromer facilitate the fecal excretion of potassium to treat hyperkalemia (FDA, Veltassa Label). Bile acid sequestrants lower systemic cholesterol by interrupting the enterohepatic circulation of bile salts, forcing the liver to use more cholesterol for bile acid synthesis (StatPearls, NBK526095).
