Gastrointestinal luminal noxious agents encompass a diverse group of harmful substances including bacterial toxins (e.g., endotoxins), pathogenic viruses, bacteria, and reactive oxygen species (free radicals) present within the gut (StatPearls, 2023). These entities are not traditional molecular targets like receptors or enzymes but are instead pathological factors that disrupt the intestinal epithelial barrier and provoke inflammatory cascades (PubMed, PMID: 10648265). Their presence is associated with a wide range of conditions, from acute secretory diarrhea and food poisoning to chronic inflammatory bowel diseases (NIH, 2022). Therapeutic strategies targeting these agents often rely on non-specific physical mechanisms rather than high-affinity molecular binding. For instance, adsorbents like activated charcoal and diosmectite are used to sequester toxins and pathogens, preventing their systemic absorption or local irritation (PubChem, 2024). Similarly, antioxidants and mucosal protectants may be employed to neutralize free radicals and shield the intestinal wall, thereby mitigating oxidative damage and supporting the restoration of normal gastrointestinal homeostasis (PubMed, PMID: 12716233).
