Overview

The gastrointestinal microbial community is a complex ecosystem of trillions of microorganisms residing in the human digestive tract that is essential for maintaining host homeostasis (NIH, 2023). It performs vital biological functions, including the fermentation of non-digestible dietary fibers into short-chain fatty acids, the synthesis of essential vitamins like K and B12, and the maturation of the host immune system (Nature Reviews Microbiology, 2022). Dysbiosis, characterized by a loss of microbial diversity or an overgrowth of pathobionts, is a key driver in the pathogenesis of Clostridioides difficile infection, inflammatory bowel disease, and various metabolic syndromes (PubMed, 2021). As a therapeutic target, the community is modulated using fecal microbiota transplants (FMT), probiotics, and prebiotics to restore ecological balance and colonization resistance (Science, 2021). Recent pharmacological advancements have led to the development of standardized, FDA-approved microbial consortia like Vowst and Rebyota for preventing the recurrence of C. difficile (FDA, 2023). Beyond gastrointestinal health, the gut microbiota influences systemic conditions through the gut-brain and gut-liver axes, making it a focal point for treating neuropsychiatric and autoimmune disorders (Cell, 2020). The community also impacts the pharmacokinetics and efficacy of various drugs, including immune checkpoint inhibitors used in cancer therapy (Lancet Oncology, 2022).
