Mucus Gel Matrix (None)

Target
None
Molecular classification
Glycoprotein Matrix, Extracellular Matrix, Polysaccharide-Protein Complex
01

Overview

The mucus gel matrix is a hydrated, viscoelastic network primarily composed of mucin glycoproteins. It forms a protective barrier on epithelial surfaces, trapping pathogens and particulates and facilitating their removal. Alterations in its composition or structure are associated with various respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases.

02

Mechanism of action

Mucolytics break down the mucus gel structure by disrupting disulfide bonds or degrading DNA. Expectorants increase hydration of the mucus. Hypertonic saline increases mucus hydration and clearance.
