Gastrointestinal pathogen colonization refers to the presence and growth of pathogenic microorganisms within the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, where these organisms multiply without necessarily causing immediate symptoms or overt infection. Colonization is distinct from infection in that it does not always result in tissue invasion or host damage, but it can serve as a reservoir for subsequent disease or transmission.
