Gastrointestinal pathogenic bacteria are a diverse group of microorganisms capable of causing disease in the human digestive tract. Key features enabling these bacteria to cause disease include adhesion molecules, toxin production, and, in some cases, invasion capabilities. They are commonly transmitted via the fecal–oral route and can lead to various clinical syndromes ranging from mild diarrhea to severe complications like hemolytic uremic syndrome. Effective treatment is complicated by increasing antibiotic resistance.
Antibiotics target bacterial cell wall synthesis, DNA replication, protein synthesis, or metabolic pathways. Bismuth subsalicylate reduces inflammation and inhibits bacterial adhesion. Probiotics promote beneficial gut microbiota to compete with pathogens.
