The gastrointestinal submucosal tissue (submucosa) is a layer of loose, yet supportive connective tissue found throughout the wall of the gastrointestinal tract, located between the mucosa and muscularis propria (muscular layer). It contains blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, and autonomic nerves, including the submucosal (Meissner’s) plexus, which controls local glandular secretion and blood flow.
