Gastrointestinal Tract (Contrast Enhancement)

Molecular classification
Anatomical Region, Imaging Target
01

Overview

The gastrointestinal (GI) tract, when referenced in the context of "contrast enhancement," is not a single molecular target or receptor but rather an anatomical region visualized using various contrast agents during imaging procedures. The goal is to improve visualization of the GI tract's structure and function for diagnostic purposes. Contrast enhancement of the GI tract is achieved by administering substances that alter the appearance of tissues on imaging modalities such as X-ray, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and ultrasound. These agents help delineate mucosal surfaces, detect masses, strictures, inflammation, and other abnormalities.

Mechanism of action

Contrast agents increase radiodensity (X-ray/CT) or alter magnetic properties (MRI) within the GI lumen/wall. Coating mucosal surfaces to highlight structural details. Distending organs with gas or fluid to separate tissue layers. Enhancing blood flow signals with microbubbles during ultrasound.
