Overview

The gastrointestinal (GI) tract is a primary site where the osmotic effects of sulfates manifest. Sulfate ions, when present in the intestinal lumen, are poorly absorbed, increasing the osmolality of intestinal contents. This draws water into the lumen, increasing stool fluidity and potentially causing diarrhea or a laxative effect. The osmotic-induced diarrhea ceases once these osmotically active substances are excreted from the GI tract. While not a specific molecular target like a receptor, the GI tract represents a functional target for osmotically active compounds.
