The gastrointestinal (GI) tract lining, also known as the mucosa, is the innermost layer of the GI tract and plays a critical role in digestion, absorption, secretion, and immune defense. It forms a continuous barrier from the mouth to the anus and is structurally adapted in different regions to meet specific functional demands. Its primary components are the epithelium, lamina propria, and muscularis mucosae. The epithelium is the primary functional unit, with cell types including epithelial cells, goblet cells, and enteroendocrine cells. Key molecules include mucin proteins like MUC2, MUC1, MUC3, MUC4, MUC12, MUC13, MUC15 and MUC17, and digestive enzymes. Disruption or damage to this lining can lead to ulcers, malabsorption syndromes, inflammatory bowel disease, or increased infection risk due to loss of barrier function.
