Overview

The gastrointestinal (GI) tract lumen is the hollow, inner space within the digestive tract through which food, fluids, and digestive secretions pass. It extends from the mouth to the anus and is the site where digestion and absorption occur. The lumen is lined by the mucosa, which includes an epithelial layer, lamina propria, and muscularis mucosae. The epithelial cells secrete mucus to protect the lining and express transmembrane mucins such as MUC1/3/4/12/13/15/17/20, contributing to the glycocalyx and host-microbe interactions. Disruption of the normal luminal environment can lead to various gastrointestinal diseases.
