Overview

Osmosis in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract lumen refers to the passive movement of water across the intestinal epithelium, driven by differences in solute concentration between the lumen and surrounding tissues. This process is fundamental for fluid balance, nutrient absorption, and overall digestive function. It is driven by osmotic gradients created by active transporters that move ions or nutrients across epithelial cells. As these solutes are transported out of or into enterocytes, water follows via osmosis to maintain osmotic equilibrium. While crucial for digestive physiology, it is not itself a direct therapeutic target but is influenced by drugs affecting ion channels and nutrient transporters.
