Overview

The gastrointestinal tract microbiome is a complex and diverse ecosystem of trillions of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, that reside in the human digestive tract. It plays a fundamental role in host health by facilitating nutrient metabolism, synthesizing essential vitamins such as K and B12, and modulating the development and function of the host immune system (NIH, 2023). Dysbiosis, or the imbalance of these microbial communities, is linked to a wide range of conditions, including Clostridioides difficile infection, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and metabolic disorders like obesity and type 2 diabetes (Nature Reviews Microbiology, 2022). As a therapeutic target, the microbiome is addressed through interventions aimed at restoring ecological balance, such as fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) and live biotherapeutic products (LBPs). Drugs like the FDA-approved Rebyota and Vowst interact with this target by introducing beneficial microbial populations to displace pathogens and restore metabolic homeostasis (FDA, 2023). Beyond infectious disease, the microbiome is being explored as a target for enhancing the efficacy of cancer immunotherapies and treating neuropsychiatric conditions via the gut-brain axis (Science, 2021).
