Overview

Gastrointestinal (GI) tract osmolarity refers to the concentration of osmotically active particles (such as ions, sugars, and other solutes) per liter of fluid within the GI lumen. It is a key physicochemical property that influences water movement across the intestinal wall and thus plays a critical role in digestion, absorption, and drug delivery. The osmolarity of GI contents determines the direction and rate of water movement between the gut lumen and body fluids. Alterations in gastrointestinal tract osmolarity are implicated in diarrheal diseases, drug formulation, and fluid therapy/nutrition.
