Gastrointestinal (GI) tract osmolarity refers to the concentration of osmotically active particles (such as ions, sugars, and other solutes) per liter of fluid within the GI lumen. It is a key physicochemical property that influences water movement across the intestinal wall and thus plays a critical role in digestion, absorption, and drug delivery. The osmolarity of GI contents determines the direction and rate of water movement between the gut lumen and body fluids.
