Overview

Gastrointestinal tract osmotic activity describes how various solutes create gradients that drive essential fluid movements throughout digestion—crucial both physiologically and clinically. Water movement occurs secondary to osmotic driving forces created by active salt transport. In small intestine and colon proximal segments have higher osmotic permeability than distal segments. Polyethylene glycol exerts more an osmotic effect than would be predicted from its molecular weight; this may reflect interactions between PEG and water molecules that alter physical chemistry.
