The gastrointestinal tract serotonergic nerve refers to the network of nerves within the GI system that utilize serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) as a neurotransmitter. These nerves are part of the enteric nervous system (ENS) and play a crucial role in regulating motility, secretion, sensation, and communication with the central nervous system via the gut–brain axis. Key components include enterochromaffin (EC) cells, enteric neurons, and various serotonin receptor subtypes (5-HT3, 5-HT4, 5-HT7), as well as the serotonin transporter (SERT).
Varies depending on the specific receptor subtype and drug. SSRIs inhibit serotonin reuptake, increasing serotonin levels in the synapse. 5-HT3 antagonists block 5-HT3 receptors, reducing nausea and pain. 5-HT4 agonists stimulate 5-HT4 receptors, promoting peristalsis.
