Mechanism of action

Drugs modulate water absorption by altering ion transport; for example, Guanylate cyclase C agonists increase intracellular cGMP, leading to CFTR activation and NHE3 inhibition, which promotes fluid secretion into the intestinal lumen (PubMed, PMID: 24906643). Conversely, SGLT1-mediated transport facilitates water absorption via solvent drag and osmotic coupling (StatPearls, 2023).
