Gastrointestinal (GI) tract water retention refers to the processes and mechanisms by which water is absorbed, secreted, or retained within the GI tract. The GI tract plays a central role in fluid homeostasis, with more than 9 liters of fluid being absorbed or secreted daily across its various segments. Water movement in the GI tract generally follows osmotic gradients created by active salt transport (mainly sodium) and hydrostatic pressure differences. Disruption can lead to diarrhea (excess secretion/poor absorption) or constipation/fluid retention.
