GATA6 antisense RNA 2 (GATA6-AS2), also referenced as RP11-627G18.1 and more commonly studied as GATA6-AS or GATA6-AS1, is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) transcribed antisense to the GATA6 gene. This lncRNA is involved in regulation of gene expression for GATA6, often modulating its function during development, and plays essential roles in endoderm and cardiac differentiation. GATA6-AS interacts with protein partners such as LOXL2, influencing epigenetic modifications (e.g., histone methylation). It is found upregulated under hypoxia and contributes to angiogenesis and endothelial gene expression as well as control over the mitochondrial function in epithelial cells. Loss or reduced expression of GATA6-AS has been linked to developmental disorders (such as congenital heart defects), impaired differentiation, and inflammation. While GATA6-AS has functional importance in development and disease, there are currently no known drugs targeting this lncRNA directly and it is not a conventional therapeutic target like receptors or enzymes. Literature sometimes uses "GATA6-AS1," "GATA6-AS2," and other isoform designations inconsistently; "GATA6 antisense RNA 1" (GATA6-AS1) is the most frequently characterized isoform in experimental models, while GATA6-AS2 is less discussed, possibly a misattribution for GATA6-AS1 or a less characterized transcript. This ambiguity means the entry is flagged as potentially incorrect if referring specifically to "GATA6-AS2." The transcript is not a protein and does not fit receptor, enzyme, or transporter categories; it is a regulatory lncRNA.
