GC-rich promoter binding protein 1 (GPBP1) is a protein coding gene primarily identified for its role as a GC-rich promoter-specific transactivating transcription factor. It was initially isolated from atherosclerotic vascular tissue, where it was found to be expressed predominantly in smooth muscle cells, though certain transcript variants are ubiquitous. GPBP1 binds to GC-rich sequences in DNA promoters, influencing the transcription of genes involved in vascular function and potentially the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Although it is associated with processes such as vascular remodeling and has altered expression in some tumors and cardiovascular diseases, there is currently no evidence indicating it is used as a therapeutic target, nor are there drugs specifically known to act on it. Multiple alternatively spliced isoforms exist, and orthologs are present in model organisms including mouse and rat. Alternative names include vasculin and SSH6.
