GCLC antisense RNA 1 (GCLC-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA transcribed antisense to the gamma-glutamylcysteine ligase catalytic subunit (GCLC) gene[5]. As an antisense RNA, GCLC-AS1 is implicated in the post-transcriptional regulation of its counterpart GCLC, a gene critical for glutathione biosynthesis and redox homeostasis. Antisense lncRNAs such as GCLC-AS1 influence gene expression through diverse mechanisms, including modulation of mRNA stability, transcriptional interference, recruitment of chromatin modifiers, and acting as competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs). Dysregulation of GCLC-AS1 has been identified in cancer, where it may contribute to tumor cell proliferation, migration, and survival, thus making it a potential therapeutic target and a candidate biomarker, especially in oncology research settings[1][5]. GCLC-AS1 has not yet reached the status of a drug target in approved therapies but is "considered a putative target" due to its role in tumor progression and gene regulation[1][5]. Many antisense lncRNAs, including GCLC-AS1, are actively studied for their mechanistic roles in human disease and for their feasibility as targets of RNA-based therapeutics[1].
