GDF5 antisense RNA 1 (GDF5-AS1)

Target
GDF5-AS1
Molecular classification
Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), Other (antisense RNA)

Overview

GDF5 antisense RNA 1 (GDF5-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA gene located antisense to the GDF5 gene, which encodes growth differentiation factor 5, a member of the BMP family involved in cartilage and bone formation[5]. GDF5-AS1 itself does not encode a protein and is thought to play a regulatory role by modulating the transcription, stability, or translation of messenger RNA from the GDF5 gene through antisense RNA mechanisms[5]. There are currently no direct reports linking GDF5-AS1 to disease, biomarkers, or drug interactions. The molecule’s relevance is in the regulatory layer of gene expression and its potential future utility as an RNA-targeted therapeutic or diagnostic marker. Most recent evidence and disease association relate to other antisense lncRNAs such as FGD5-AS1, not GDF5-AS1[4][6].

Mechanism of action

Not applicable for drugs, as no direct drug interactions are documented.

03

Biological functions

Gene regulation: Modulates the expression of the adjacent GDF5 geneEpigenetic regulation: Possible roles in chromatin modification, though direct evidence for GDF5-AS1 is limitedOther: Regulates mRNA stability and translation of neighboring protein-coding genes
04

Disease associations

Other: No direct links to major classified diseases like cancer, neurodegeneration, or cardiovascular disease are currently documented for GDF5-AS1 specifically (data available is mainly for FGD5-AS1, a different gene)
