Overview

GDNF antisense RNA 1 (GDNF-AS1) is a **long non-coding RNA (lncRNA)** transcribed from the opposite strand of the *glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF)* gene[2][4]. It consists of four exons, undergoes alternative splicing, and generates multiple isoforms, typically non-coding[1]. GDNF-AS1 is expressed in several human tissues, with pronounced expression in the testis, kidney, ovary, and brain regions including the cerebellum and nucleus accumbens[1]. Its biological function appears to involve the regulation of GDNF gene expression, possibly by modulating chromatin structure or acting as a transcriptional regulator. GDNF-AS1 has been implicated in neurological and reproductive system development and has potential, though still largely investigational, involvement in cancer biology due to regulation of cancer-testis antigens and genes associated with tumorigenesis[1][4]. There is currently no evidence that GDNF-AS1 is a direct therapeutic target, nor are there any drugs that target it or clinically approved biomarker roles for this RNA.
