Overview

GDNF-inducible zinc finger protein 1 (GZF1) is a sequence-specific transcriptional repressor characterized by the presence of a BTB/POZ domain and multiple C2H2-type zinc finger motifs[1][4][5]. It is induced by glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) signaling and binds a defined consensus DNA sequence (known as the GZF1 responsive element, GRE) in the regulatory regions of target genes, such as HOXA10[1]. GZF1 represses transcription by RNA polymerase II in a sequence-specific manner and likely regulates spatial and temporal gene expression during development, particularly in renal morphogenesis[1][5]. It functions primarily in the nucleus and has a role in modulating morphogenesis by acting as a negative regulator of transcription[1][4][5]. Disease associations include joint laxity, short stature, myopia, and certain forms of skeletal dysplasia[5].
