Gene Expression Level refers to the quantitative measurement of the process by which information encoded in a gene is used to direct the assembly of a protein or a functional RNA molecule (National Human Genome Research Institute, 2024). It is a fundamental biological metric and a phenotypic state rather than a discrete molecular target such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter (Nature Education, 2014). While therapeutic agents—including small molecules, antisense oligonucleotides, and CRISPR-based gene editors—are designed to modulate the expression levels of specific genes, 'Gene Expression Level' itself is the outcome or measurement of these interventions. In drug discovery, transcriptomic profiling is used to identify biomarkers, evaluate drug toxicity, and determine the mechanism of action of various compounds (NCBI, 2022). Because it represents a broad biological process encompassing thousands of different genes and their respective products, it cannot be classified as a specific therapeutic target for drug binding.
