Overview

Cell division is the fundamental biological process by which a parent cell splits to give rise to two daughter cells, ensuring the maintenance, growth, and repair of tissues, as well as genetic stability from generation to generation[1][7][9]. In eukaryotes, cell division occurs through mitosis (producing identical daughter cells) or meiosis (producing gametes with half the parent’s chromosome number)[5][7][9]. The process is highly regulated by key molecular complexes, including cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs), cyclins, and ubiquitin ligases such as the anaphase-promoting complex/cyclosome (APC/C), with numerous checkpoints that monitor DNA integrity and fidelity of chromosome segregation[1][2][6][7]. Disruption of cell division control is a hallmark of cancer and many other diseases[1][2][5]. Because "general cell division" is a process, not a discrete molecular target, drugs act by modulating its regulators—thus “general cell division” itself is not directly druggable[2][6].
