Overview

General cellular components and signaling pathways refers to the collective structural and functional systems within a cell that maintain homeostasis and respond to external stimuli. Cellular components include essential organelles such as the nucleus, mitochondria, and the plasma membrane, which provide the necessary environment for life-sustaining processes (Alberts et al., Molecular Biology of the Cell, 2002). Signaling pathways, such as the Notch, Wnt, and MAPK cascades, are series of molecular interactions that transmit external signals to the nucleus to regulate gene expression and cell fate (Sever & Brugge, Signal Transduction in Cancer, 2015). Because this term describes a vast array of biological functions rather than a single molecular entity, it is not considered a specific therapeutic target in drug discovery. Instead, researchers target individual proteins or enzymes within these pathways to achieve precise therapeutic effects while minimizing off-target toxicity (Katz et al., Signaling networks: the world of mechanisms, 2007). Consequently, targeting such a generalized category is not a viable pharmacological strategy.
