Overview

The general immune system is a complex, multi-layered defense network comprising physical barriers, specialized cells, and soluble proteins designed to protect the host from pathogenic invasion and internal cellular abnormalities such as malignancy (StatPearls, 2023). It is functionally divided into the innate immune system, which provides rapid but non-specific responses, and the adaptive immune system, which offers highly specific recognition and long-term immunological memory (NIH, 2024). While the general immune system is not a single molecular target, its individual components—such as cytokines, cell-surface receptors, and intracellular signaling kinases—are the focus of modern pharmacology (NCBI, 2023). Therapeutic interventions often aim to either suppress an overactive immune response in the context of autoimmune diseases and organ transplantation or to augment immune activity to eliminate cancer cells or chronic viral infections. Due to the system's intricate balance, pharmacological modulation carries inherent risks, including the potential for life-threatening opportunistic infections or systemic inflammatory syndromes like cytokine release syndrome (PubMed, 2022).
