Target intelligence / Profile preview
General immune system via paracrine immunomodulation refers to the physiological process where cells, particularly immune or mesenchymal cells, secrete signaling molecules to alter the behavior of adjacent cells within the local microenvironment (Nature Reviews Immunology, 2018). This mechanism is a cornerstone of local immune homeostasis and is frequently exploited in regenerative medicine and cell-based therapies, such as Mesenchymal Stem Cell (MSC) treatments (StatPearls, 2023). Instead of direct cell-to-cell contact, this process relies on the secretome, which includes cytokines, growth factors, and exosomes, to suppress inflammation or stimulate tissue repair (Journal of Translational Medicine, 2019). In disease states like cancer, paracrine signaling can be hijacked to create an immunosuppressive niche that allows for tumor evasion (PubMed, 2021). Conversely, in autoimmune conditions, therapeutic paracrine modulation aims to restore balance by delivering anti-inflammatory signals locally. Because this term describes a broad biological process involving multiple pathways and cell types, it is not classified as a single molecular target but rather a therapeutic strategy or physiological phenomenon.
Secretion of soluble mediators such as cytokines, chemokines, and extracellular vesicles that modulate the activity, differentiation, and phenotype of neighboring immune cells within the local microenvironment.
