General metabolic enzymes and amino acid transporters

Molecular classification

Overview

General metabolic enzymes and amino acid transporters represent a broad category of proteins essential for cellular homeostasis and nutrient acquisition. Metabolic enzymes, such as those involved in the urea cycle or glycolysis, catalyze the chemical transformations necessary for energy production and biosynthesis (Nature Reviews Cancer, 2011). Amino acid transporters, primarily belonging to the Solute Carrier (SLC) superfamily, regulate the flux of amino acids across the plasma membrane to support protein synthesis and mTOR signaling (UniProt, 2023; SLC Tables). These proteins are frequently exploited as therapeutic targets in oncology, where tumor cells exhibit addiction to specific nutrients like glutamine or asparagine. For example, L-asparaginase is used to deplete systemic asparagine in leukemia, while inhibitors of the LAT1 transporter (SLC7A5), such as JPH203, are under investigation for solid tumors (PubMed, 2020). Because this term describes a functional grouping rather than a specific molecular entity, it is considered too broad for precise pharmacological classification.
