General microbial cells – non-specific cellular components refers to the collective structural and functional elements of microorganisms, such as cell membranes, proteins, and nucleic acids, that are targeted by broad-spectrum antimicrobial agents (StatPearls, 2023). Unlike targeted therapies that inhibit specific enzymes, these agents—primarily antiseptics and disinfectants—act through non-selective chemical reactions like protein denaturation, lipid dissolution, and oxidation (CDC, 2008). For instance, alcohols disrupt membranes and denature proteins, while oxidizing agents like hydrogen peroxide produce free radicals that attack essential cell components (PubChem, 2024). These mechanisms are effective against a wide range of pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi, making them indispensable for infection control and sterilization (NIH, 2022). However, the lack of specificity means these agents can also damage host tissues, limiting their use primarily to topical applications or inanimate surfaces (PubMed, 2021). Consequently, this category represents a broad group of non-specific chemical vulnerabilities rather than a discrete molecular entity used in systemic drug design.
